1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 1914

There’s a lot more research needed on this photo which shows men of the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in 1914. The notes below are a work in progress, so do leave a comment on this post if you can identify any of the faces here. All of the uniformed men wear Boer War medal ribbons and are identified as:

Unknown Capt, Unknown, Lieutenant Colonel Guy Cunninghame Knight (1866-1914), Unknown, Unknown Capt

The Broad Arrow, 23rd January 1914, states:

“A boxing tournament was held by the 1st Bn Scots Guards on the 13th inst at Aldershot… Welter-weights – Pte Anderson, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment beat First Class Air Mechanic Hill, Royal Flying Corps; Pte Bristow, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment beat Sergeant Hill, 1st Bn Black Watch… Middle-weights… Pte Marriott, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, beat Pte Tarney of the same regiment…

The Army & Navy Gazette, 21st February 1914, states:

At Aldershot the 1st Scots Guards held a very successful tourney at the Marlborough Lines Gymnasium on Thursday night… Open Middle-weights – L-Cpl Farney [Tarney] (1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment), beat Pte Thompson, (1st Northamptonshire Regiment), on points… Open welter-weights – Pte Bristow, (1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment) beat Pte Westley (1st Northamptonshire Regiment)…

Liverpool Echo, 7th March 1914, states:

“Army Championships… Concluded late last night at Aldershot… Welter – Lieutenant L H Jackson (13th Rajputs) beat Lieutenant M A Cross (1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment) in the third round…”

“The inter-unit trophy was won by the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment with 28 points.”

“Men’s contests. Feather – Corporal Miller (1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment) beat Rifleman W Budd (1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade) on points.”

Sheffield Independent, 23rd December 1914, states:

“Sergeant J Miller , Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, the winner of four Service championships, has recovered from the wound received at Ypres, and rejoins the reserve battalion of his regiment next week.”
