I am delighted to announce that British Army Ancestors has launched with over 11m searchable records. The aim of this site is that over time it will be THE place to come to to find a photo of British Army soldiers. The current date range is 1850 to 1920 but this will expand over time. The site is easy to search and it is easy to upload images. There are millions of photos of our Britsh Army Ancestors out there. I encourage you to use this site as the central repository for storing these. For my part, I’ll keep adding more data and I will listen to suggestions for site improvement. These men and women sacrificed a lot for their monarch and Empire, the least we can do is remember them.
You can search for a soldier from the British Army Ancestors Home Page but you will need to register in order to upload or download images. The registration process and the adding and uploading processes are designed to be quick and efficient. Anybody can search for a record but if you want to upload a photo or view an existing photo in larger-than-thumbnail format you will need to register.
There are millions of searchable British Army Ancestors records on this site. These give basic information about the individual concerned; information taken from service records and medal or muster rolls. All records on this site link back to fuller information either on Findmypast or on The National Archives’ site. Links to First World War officers’ records will take you to The National Archives’ website where you should make a note of the archive reference (beginning with WO 339 or WO 374). You can then call up the original documents at The National Archives or hire a researcher to do this for you.
